Diwali

This week millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains from around the World celebrate Diwali. The celebration is known as the Festival of Light and it helps them to remember good overcomes evil. It begins this year on Thursday 12th November but the main celebration will take place this Saturday (14th November)!

Listen to my story to learn how one family celebrates Diwali.

On Saturday night you might see fireworks in the sky all over Leeds as people celebrate even though they can't be with their families this year and many house windows will be lit up with diya lamps.

Important Vocabulary

Rangoli - a colourful design made on the floor out of rice, sand and flowers to welcome guests to your house

Diya - these are lamps made out of clay that will be placed all around the house to welcome in the Goddess Lakshmi (goddess of wealth and wisdom)

Puja - this is a form of worship and is often done at home at a shrine where families gather together to pray

Tilak - this is a coloured spot often worn on the forehead
